Mid-Valley Literacy Center – Legacy Giving Case Statement

Did you know that low-literacy skills cost businesses and tax payers $20 billion in lost wages and productivity annually? One in five adult Oregonians do not have a high school diploma or GED certificate. The unemployed and underemployed are seeking paths out of the cycle of poverty. Literacy skills support individuals, families, businesses and the entire economy of Oregon.

Why Mid-Valley Literacy Center is different
The small group instruction taught by our trained volunteer tutors makes Mid-Valley Literacy Center (MVLC) an effective learning environment that allows individuals to increase their language development much faster than in traditional class rooms. Our unique services to businesses provide their employees, at their work site, the customized instruction that increases employee engagement and productivity as well as reduces errors on the job due to language barriers.

MVLC need and commitment
The increased demand for literacy services will continue to stretch our resources and force us to seek additional funds to address literacy challenges in our community. The increased demand for alternative ways to access our tutoring presents huge barriers to literacy and family stability. However, we are here for the long haul because our students and our community need our services.

Stories from our students and tutors
One of our students recently told her tutor that what she learned in her Pre-CNA class saved her daughter’s life. She knew what to do when she had to call the doctor and take her daughter to the hospital. Another adult student just achieved her GED Certificate after three years of hard work with her volunteer tutors. A newly trained volunteer tutor, living in Guatemala, is now teaching the Spanish GED Math class through our online system. Your support has made these successes possible.

Your impact
You can help us exceed the 750 volunteer tutors we have trained. You have already helped over 4,000 adults learn English, obtain the GED Certificate, become Certified Nursing Assistants, or prepare for US Citizenship. You can help even more individuals achieve their educational goals.

Cliff Stites, one of our business donors has this to say about our services: “Every problem has a solution. The Mid-Valley Literacy Center has become a strategic piece to the puzzle in helping CabDoor.”

Your opportunity
Together, with your help, we can increase the educational opportunities for more adults through our Planned Giving Program. You have the opportunity to leave a legacy that changes lives and changes our community, forever. What will your legacy be? Should your name be included in our legacy giving program? Would you like to learn more? You may contact me for a confidential conversation.

We hope you and your loved ones are doing well and staying safe during this difficult time. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your ongoing support of Mid-Valley Literacy Center.

Sincerely,

Vivian Ang
